I have tried The Woman in White - couldn't do it beyond the first chapter. Too dark for my liking.

You should perhaps try his book The Woman in White, it's similar in the presentation to this one (and quite a mystery too).

I am not very certain about my feelings for Ezra Jennings. I did feel sorry for his plight and have admired the good life he led, however there was something about him I didn't like, although I cannot quite put my finger on it. Perhaps the air of mystery hanging about him, perhaps the fact that he appeared suddenly in the middle of the novel (somewhat like an afterthought). Or perhaps its just me :)

I've always found Wilkie Collins a bit emotionally oppressive, and "The Moonstone" is the only of his books I ever finished reading. I've tried two other books, but stopped after a few pages.

I found Miss Rachel Verinder totally charming from the first moment when she appears in the narrative. Ezra Jennings... well, he is probably not one of the main characters, but he fascinates me. And I do believe in the experiment, though agree that it looks a little fantastic.

That Gabriel sounds pompous sometimes, so I can see why you would think he was annoying now and then!

I'll have to read "The Moonstone" eventually. I see at the end of your post that you have also read "Poor Miss Finch", that's one book I'm reading for the Classics Circuit --so I'll wait to read that review.

For those of you that liked the book as much as we did, we made a "Casual Game" based on the book. It is called Mystery Masterpiece: The Moonstone. You can check it out here: http://www.freezetag.com/game_details.php?gid=220

I'm about 3/4 done with The Moonstone, so I skipped your section on the medical experiment because I didn't want spoilers, but I enjoyed your review. Miss Clack is wonderful, isn't she? At times I felt like she was Mary Bennet from P&P incarnate. And I agree with your summation of Betteridge as more like Watson than Holmes :)

I've been wondering about the Shivering Sand--is there really such a place on the Yorkshire coast or purely Collins's creation?

I've discovered a couple of adaptations. Can anyone recommend one over the other?

Love this tour!

I too loved the characters the best of this! The end, as you said, was odd, but oh well, it was fun. Mysteries aren't necessarily my favorite and I think I preferred The Woman in White for that reason but still, I'm with you in being glad I read it!
